I have come to realize I have had multiple identities and part of my life’s work has been healthy integration. I am a white female born in the Western United States, in a rough, mining town in 1950, so life roles initially available to me were largely dependent on culture and ethnicity, gender, societal barriers, and biological inheritance. Basically nurse, teacher, secretary or wife. How different my life would have been if any of the above factors were altered. I have broken out of many of my early restraints but do acknowledge the above factors played significant roles in my development. I am also aware how my white privilege opened doors to me that others did not have.
During my career I worked as a licensed professional in mental health agencies, inpatient/outpatient drug treatment facilities, schools and in state/federal prisons. I retired after having been on the faculty of several higher educational institutions. I am now in my mid 70s and very open to learning and understanding each person’s unique human journey.
